In the heart of the Okavango Delta, Botswana lies
a camp called Abu (meaning everything about elephants) it was
here that three young male elephants spent their youth. They were
orphans of culls in Kruger National Park, South Africa and were
fortunate enough to have been brought to Botswana by Randall Moore to become
part of his herd. Having spent their youth frolicking in the waters
of the delta, munching on the luscious vegetation on offer and
playing with others in the herd, they grew into adolescence and it was time
for them to leave their herd and live the life of a bull elephant.
Permission was sought and granted from the Department of Wildlife
and National Parks for Mafunyane to be released in 2002 and due to
the success of this on 10th of February 2003 Small Thando and Seba
were also released. In addition an opportunity arose to release a
young female, Nandipa, who was released in September 2003.
