FESTIVE FUNDRAISER

It’s time to dig deep and make a donation to help us conserve the African elephant! Every penny we raise this festive season will be doubled by a match funder, so your help really counts!

Life in rural Botswana can be tough. Home to the largest remaining population of African elephant is an accolade Botswana is proud of, but many community members find it hard to see the benefits at times. Living alongside wildlife has its challenges, crop raiding elephants being amongst them, but daily chores can also be affected like fetching water or going to school. What do you do if an elephant is in the way?

Elephants for Africa has a holistic approach to its work, understanding the needs and requirements of both elephants and the people living alongside them. Since being in the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park we have built strong relationships with one community in particular, and working in partnership we are helping them work towards human-wildlife coexistence and safe and sustainable livelihoods. Word has spread, and other communities have asked for help in gaining access to knowledge and information about mitigating techniques to protect their crops, how to live safely alongside wildlife and augmenting the work of their primary schools’ Environmental Clubs, where the home-grown conservation leaders of the future are nurtured, through our Elefun initiative.

In 2016 we would love to expand our research and outreach programme and partner with more of these communities, and with your help we can! As our community officer Mankind Molosiwa says “By teaching communities of this area how animals behave so they don’t see wild animals as enemies, they will appreciate and be friendly towards our wildlife”.
