Festive Fundraiser 2020

Shumba & Leya our trusty Land cruisers with Walona (LtoR), our community outreach officer, Mankind our Community Officer and Thata, our research and camp assistant

For #GivingTuesday we are launching our Festive Fundraiser to raise funds to look after two vital members of our team, our old landcruisers Leya and Shumba.

#Donate today at bit.ly/EfA_Donate

Anyone who donates $100US or equivalent throughout the campaign will receive an Elephants for Africa beaded bracelet.*

Leya (which means Pelican in Setswana) is 34 and started her research career studying the impact of wilddogs on communities in and around the Okavango Delta. She joined our team in 2018 being kindly donated to us by the research team who no longer needed her and is now a vital part of our Community Coexistence Project.

Shumba (meaning lion) is 32 years old and prehaps had a tougher life. Our Founder and Director, Dr Kate Evans, first met her when she was studying the male elephants of the Okavango Delta. Shumba turned up with a film crew with whom Kate shared a camp for a few years as they filmed the wonders of the Delta. Shumba saved her from a few sticky situations, most memorably being at a very deep crossing, home to a couple of crocodiles!!! When our Communtiy Coexistence Project started in 2015, Shumba was up for sale and she has been working in a dryer but no less harsh environment since. She spends most of her time with our Community Officer Mankind helping him to deliver chilli to our partner farmers who use it to keep elephants out of their crops.
