Wanderings of a musth male

We caught one of our collared elephants showing signs of musth on our camera traps and his collar data then showed him streaking away – probably off to find females. We work in a predominately male elephant area and so males have to go off in search of females. Musth is a time of high levels of testosterone that makes them more attractive to females and more able to fend off other males.
